A WebWise Nation
November 10th, 2008 | Chris-Curtis-blog
For those who were unfamiliar with the “grassroots” approach of the Obama campaign, which largely contributed to its success, the world as you know it has become WebWise.
Internet Marketers stood proudly as we watched the political candidates embrace the many tactics we preach to communicate, rally, and unite our nation. From social marketing and viral video, to blogging and twittering, the world took notice and participated in 21st century methodologies for “getting the word out”.
The tools are free, and familiarity can be gained with just a few keystrokes. Affordability is not an issue, however, one would need to understand how each tool can be used to command attention to your product or service, and also know which one to use when.
Differing in their approach, each web 2.0 element has its benefits and drawbacks, and caters to a different type of audience. As we see that media outlets like CNN and MSNBC have embraced citizen journalism, mobile marketing and widgets, it gives even more evidence that our old paper-bound marketing world has slipped away. The tech world has crept in, paving new roads for modern gateways to success. Geeks are no longer oddballs, but cool-to-know computerheads guiding the new millennium. Find one, and learn from them. Find several, and become one of them.
If you haven’t explored these tools for yourself, the sooner you do it, the better off you will be as the world makes great strides in utilizing the internet to close the communication gaps of yesteryear, and attain higher levels of achievement. It’s not just talk anymore. The digital age is now, and you’re in it.
In no specific order, here’s what you’ll need to add to your arsenal of knowledge:
- Social Networking
- Mobile Marketing
- Blogging and blog networks
- Podcasting and Audios
- Viral Video Production and distribution
- Twitter and Microblogging networks
- Keywords and search engine optimization
That’s just icing for now, but it is quite a bit for anyone who is new to the online marketing arena. You won’t learn them all in a few minutes, so expect to dedicate some time to learning these things. Patience is a virtue, and reading is fundamental.
